The Number One Diet Mistake You are Probably Making

I talk to a lot of people about their nutrition habits and the number one thing almost every single one of them is doing wrong is that they aren't eating enough.

Somehow amongst the crazy diet trends we got fixated on a number and decided that number was the holy grail of calories to eat in a day and get AMAZING results.  If you've been around the block you probably already know what that number is, but if you don't it is 1200.

Sounds easy enough, eat 1200 calories a day and lose weight but there is a major flaw in this way of thinking. We are all different, we have different calorie needs, different activity levels and different metabolic rates. So for most people 1200 isn't enough calories and you don't lose weight because your body isn't getting enough fuel so it holds on to everything! It always amazes people when I tell them to eat more and they suddenly start dropping pounds.

I am not going to make this all sciency for you, because if you're reading this I assume you don't know all the math that goes into finding daily calorie needs (that is a whole other topic for another day.)

To put it simply imagine their is a tiny child you inside of you. When you don't give it enough food it gets scared it won't ever get to eat again so it holds on to every morsel you give it. So everything you eat is being stockpiled for later energy needs because SCARCITY! Now imagine you start feeding it enough. That inner child begins to trust you to give it the nutrients and fuel it needs so it starts believing you will feed it regularly and starts letting go of some of its hoard of saved energy because it now trusts you to keep it well fed and fueled. That is what is happening every time you under eat.

So if you have been chugging along at a certain calorie range and not seeing results or have been eating low calorie foods and may be in to much of a deficit try adding in 100-200 extra calories every two weeks until you start losing weight.

We have been told for years to eat less and lose weight and though it is true you can eat to little. As you start to break away from the calories and learn to eat to fuel your body it gets easier to listen to your body and knows what it needs.

You can do this. Keep trying. Keep adjusting. Keep making healthy choices. Keep learning. I promise you that each small step is building to massive change. I believe in you.

Hit your hotel gym. It may not have your usual equipment but something is better than nothing. Especially if working out is your stress reliever. Run: You can pretty much do this anywhere and it is a great way to get in some sightseeing or scoop places to explore later  See if you gym has any ...

How Did You Celebrate the Holiday?

Yesterday was Labor Day for those of us in the United States this holiday celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers.  If you celebrated yesterday and you are feeling a little rough today here are three tips to help ease you into your Tuesday and get you feeling a bit better. 1. Drink at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces. If you indulged in adult beverages or ate some foods that are higher in sodium today than you are used to you may be feeling a little rough. Added electorylates could also help you feel a tad better, along with some green tea or black coffee for a boost of caffeinated energy without the sugar crash later.  2. Add some protein to each meal or snack (it will help keep your sugar levels stable) and add in some fruits and veggies for their antioxidant punch.  3. Don't beat yourself up for indulging. Life is about balance and one bad day, snack or meal won't wreck your progress. Get back on track today and ...
